1. Stainless Steel Sheets: Grades, Finishes, Sizes, and Weights
1.1 Stainless Steel Grades: 304 vs 316 vs 316L
Selecting the correct grade of stainless steel sheet is the single most important decision a buyer makes. Using the wrong grade leads to premature corrosion, warranty failure, and costly replacement.
Hidayath stocks all primary grades as SS sheet, stainless steel sheet coil, and stainless-steel coil.
SS 304 (1.4301)
SS 304 is the most widely used stainless steel grade. It contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel (18/8). It has excellent corrosion resistance in most environment. It is used in kitchen equipment, food processing, architectural cladding. They are also ideal for decorative paneling, handrails, and general fabrication. Our SS304 sheet and ss304 sheet coil stock covers 0.5 mm to 12 mm thickness in standard and custom widths.
SS 316 (1.4401)
SS 316 Contains 16% chromium, 10% nickel, and 2% molybdenum. The molybdenum addition provides significantly superior resistance to chlorides (salt water, coastal environments, swimming pools, chemical processing). They are mandatory for marine, offshore, food-grade, pharmaceutical, and coastal architectural applications. We have 316 stainless steel coil and cut sheet stocked with us.
SS 316L (1.4404)
This is a low-carbon variant of 316. The reduced carbon content prevents sensitization during welding. They reduce corrosion resistance in the heat-affected zone. They are perfect for all welded fabrications in 316 applications, particularly pressure vessels, tanks, and pipe systems. Hidayath stocks stainless steel 316L coils supplier grade for welded fabrication projects.
SS 430 (1.4016)
SS 430 is a ferritic (magnetic) stainless steel. They are lower cost than austenitic grades due to absence of nickel. They provide good resistance to mild corrosion, excellent surface finish capability. SS 430 is not suitable for chloride environments.
SS 201 / 202
SS 201 and SS 202 are the lower-cost austenitic grades. They substitute manganese for nickel. They are used in decorative, dry-environment applications. Price-sensitive buyers should understand that 201/202 offers notably lower corrosion resistance than 304.
What is least expensive stainless steel sheet metal?
The least expensive stainless steel sheet metal grades are SS 201 and SS 202. It substitutes lower-cost manganese for the nickel used in 304 and 316. SS 430 (ferritic, nickel-free) is also significantly cheaper than austenitic grades. Among the standard engineering grades, SS 304 is always less expensive than 316 or 316L due to the absence of molybdenum.
Hidayath provides grade selection guidance to ensure customers buy the correct specification the first time.
1.2 Stainless Steel Sheet Finishes
What are the finishes of stainless steel sheet metal?
Stainless steel sheet is available in a range of standard mill and polished finishes. Each suited to different applications:
- Hot rolled, annealed, pickled — rough, dull surface for industrial applications where appearance is not important
- Cold rolled, bright annealed — smooth, slightly reflective. The most common commercial finish. This is the standard for general fabrication, food equipment, and as a base for further polishing.
- 2D (cold rolled, annealed, pickled) — duller than 2B, used for deep drawing applications
- Ground/brushed, 80-grit — visible directional grain, used in kitchen equipment and architectural panels.
- Brushed, 120–180 grit — finer brushed finish, standard for food processing and catering equipment.
- Mirror polished — highly reflective mirror surface. They are used in decorative architectural applications like lift panels, and signage.
- Hairline (HL) — long, continuous directional grain, widely used in architectural cladding and decorative stainless steel sheet
- Embossed / Patterned — surface patterns including stainless steel sheet clover leaf, diamond, linen weave, for anti-slip and decorative use.
Hidayath stocks cold rolled stainless steel sheet, hairline, mirror, and embossed finishes.
1.3 Standard Sizes and Sheet Weights
Hidayath supplies stainless steel sheet in standard coil-slit widths and cut-to-length formats. The most common stainless steel sheet sizes are 4x8 (1219 mm x 2438 mm) format. It is stocked in full range of thicknesses. Custom sizes are available cut from coil.
| Thickness | Weight per m2 (SS 304) | Common Application |
|---|---|---|
| 0.5 mm | 3.93 kg/m2 | Cladding, splashbacks, decorative panels |
| 0.8 mm | 6.28 kg/m2 | Kitchen equipment, catering, HVAC |
| 1.0 mm | 7.85 kg/m2 | General fabrication, food equipment, enclosures |
| 1.2 mm | 9.42 kg/m2 | Tanks, hoppers, ducting |
| 1.5 mm | 11.78 kg/m2 | Structural panels, heavy fabrication |
| 2.0 mm | 15.70 kg/m2 | 3mm stainless steel sheet and above — structural, heavy duty |
| 3.0 mm | 23.55 kg/m2 | Industrial plate, structural, marine |
| 4.0 mm | 31.40 kg/m2 | Heavy industrial plate, still plates |
| 6.0 mm | 47.10 kg/m2 | Industrial plate, pressure equipment |
| 6.35 mm (1/4 inch / 0.25") | 49.87 kg/m2 | Heavy industrial plate applications |
How much do 0.25 stainless steel sheets weigh?
A 0.25-inch (6.35 mm) stainless steel sheet weighs approximately 49.87 kg per square metre (or 4.63 kg per square foot).
For a standard 4x8 foot (1219 mm x 2438 mm) sheet, the total weight is approximately 49.87 x 1.219 x 2.438 = 148.3 kg.
For a 1000 mm x 2000 mm sheet the weight is 49.87 x 1.0 x 2.0 = 99.7 kg.
Weight varies slightly between SS 304 (7,900 kg/m3 density) and SS 316 (7,980 kg/m3 density).
Always confirm actual weight with your supplier when planning lifting equipment, vehicle load calculations, and storage rack capacities.
How much does a sheet of stainless steel cost?
Stainless steel sheet prices in the UAE are quoted per kilogram (kg) and vary by grade, thickness, finish, and order quantity.
As a market guide: SS 304 2B finish sheet in standard thicknesses (1–3 mm) typically costs AED 12–20 per kg for trade quantities.
SS 316L sheet commands a 25–40% premium over 304. Polished finishes (hairline, mirror) add AED 3–8 per kg over the 2B base price depending on finish grade.
A standard 1.0 mm SS 304 2B sheet (1219 x 2438 mm, 23.3 kg) would cost approximately AED 280–465 at current trade rates.
Specialty and decorative stainless steel sheets (perforated stainless steel sheet, expanded stainless steel sheets, stainless steel sheet clover leaf pattern) carry additional processing premiums. Contact Hidayath Stainless Steel LLC for a current price list and volume discount schedule.

2. Stainless Steel Coils and GI Coils: Supply, Grades, and Applications
2.1 Stainless Steel Sheet Coil and Slit Coil
Steel sheet coils are the primary format in which stainless steel is supplied from mill to service centre. Hidayath operates as both a stainless-steel coil exporter and a domestic UAE service centre. We slit master coils to custom widths and cutting to length for trade and industrial customers who require specific dimensions.
Stainless steel coil is available in SS 304, SS 316, and SS 316L grades, in thicknesses from 0.3 mm to 6 mm, in widths from 100 mm (slit coil for roll-forming and tube manufacturing) to 1,500 mm (full-width coil for deep drawing and heavy industrial use).
What is the difference between a stainless-steel coil and a stainless-steel sheet?
A stainless steel coil is the continuous rolled form as produced at the mill. Typically 5–25 tonnes of material wound onto a mandrel. Stainless steel sheet is produced by cutting lengths from the coil to a specified dimension.
Coil offers advantages for high-volume fabricators with roll-forming, tube-welding, or pressing equipment. They help less handling waste, continuous forming without joins, and lower per-kg cost. Cut sheet is more practical for jobbing fabricators, one-off projects, and applications requiring specific finished dimensions. Hidayath supplies both formats — master coil, slit coil, and cut-to-length sheet — from the same stock.
2.2 GI Coil (Galvanised Iron / Steel Coil)
GI coil (galvanised steel coil) is cold-rolled steel coated with zinc through a continuous hot-dip galvanising process. The zinc coating provides sacrificial corrosion protection.
GI coil is widely used in roofing, HVAC ducting, automotive panels, electrical enclosures, and general fabrication.
Hidayath Group is an established GI coil suppliers in UAE, stocking standard Z100–Z275 coating weights in full width and slit formats.
3. Structural Stainless Steel Sections: C Channel, U Channel, Angle Bar, and Flat Bar
3.1 C Channel and U Channel Stainless Steel
Stainless steel C channel (also written as C-shaped steel channel or stainless-steel c channel) and stainless-steel U channel are structural and architectural sections produced by hot rolling or cold forming stainless steel into a cross-sectional profile.
They serve as framing members, support rails, glass retention channels, edge trims, and structural reinforcement in a wide range of applications.
Hidayath Group supplies C channel suppliers in UAE and U channel stainless steel to fabricators, glazing contractors, construction companies, and maintenance teams.
Our range covers standard structural C channel profiles as well as the specialist SS U channel for glass.
What sizes are available for stainless steel C channel and U channel?
Hidayath stocks stainless steel C channel and U channel in the following standard sizes: C channel from 20 x 10 mm to 100 x 50 mm in SS 304 and SS 316; U channel from 10 x 10 mm to 80 x 40 mm.
The 12mm stainless steel u channel is a popular size for glass edge retention, shower screen framing, and architectural trim.
The 316 stainless steel u channel is specified for coastal projects, marine environments, and swimming pool where chloride resistance is essential. Custom profiles and 6-metre lengths are available to order. All sections are supplied in 2B or brushed finish as standard.
3.2 Stainless Steel Angle Bar (SS Angle Bar)
Stainless steel angle bar — also called architectural stainless steel angle or ss angle bar is an L-shaped structural section. They are available as equal angle (both legs the same length) and unequal angle (legs of different length). Equal angle is the standard form for most applications.
Stainless steel equal angle sizes stocked by Hidayath include 20 x 20 mm through to 100 x 100 mm in 3 mm and 6 mm leg thickness. The angle bar stainless range covers SS 304 (for general fabrication, food equipment, architectural use) and SS 316 (for marine, coastal, and chemical environments).
Architectural stainless steel angle with a brushed or mirror finish is used extensively in interior fit-out, retail environments, and facade detailing throughout UAE's construction sector.
3.3 Stainless Steel Flat Bar and Polished Flat Bar
Stainless steel flat bar is a solid rectangular section. It is used as a structural member, grating bar, frame component, or decorative trim. Flat bar is the standard form for handrail support brackets, shelf supports and gratings.
Polished stainless steel flat bar carries a factory-applied surface finish. Hidayath supplies both steel flat bar (mild steel, hot-rolled) and polished stainless steel flat bar in standard widths from 10 mm to 200 mm and thicknesses from 2 mm to 25 mm.
The stainless-steel flat bar range covers SS 304 and SS 316 for all standard applications. Stainless steel strips manufacturers supplying narrower slit strip (under 10 mm wide) for gasket, spring, and precision fabrication purposes are also served from our coil slitting capability.
What is the difference between stainless steel flat bar and stainless steel strip?
Flat bar is a solid rectangular section typically 10 mm wide and above, produced by hot rolling or cold drawing. It is used as a structural or decorative framing member.
Stainless steel strip is a narrower, thinner product (typically under 10 mm wide and under 2 mm thick) slit from coil, used in spring-making, sealing applications, banding, and precision components.
3.4 Stainless Steel Square Rod
Stainless steel square rod (also called square bar) is a solid section with a square cross-section, available in SS 304 and SS 316 grades. It is used for brackets, axles, hinges, furniture legs, architectural detailing, and machinery components. Hidayath stocks standard sizes from 6 mm to 80 mm square in 3- and 6-metre lengths.
4. Chequered Plate, Flooring Plate, and Specialty Sheet Products
4.1 Chequered Plate and Checkered Plate
Chequered plate (also spelled checkered plate or chequer plate) is a flat steel or stainless steel sheet with a raised pattern on one face. They are typically a diamond, lentil, or five-bar pattern. The raised pattern provides anti-slip traction and increased rigidity.
Chequered plates are the standard industrial flooring product for mezzanine floors, walkways, stair treads, vehicle ramps, loading docks, and machine platforms.
Hidayath supplies chequered steel sheet and chequered plates in: mild steel (hot-rolled, typically 3 mm to 10 mm total thickness). We also provide stainless steel 304 (for food production, pharmaceutical, and hygienic environments).
The steel plate flooring category — chequered plate used as industrial floor covering is one of our highest-volume product lines. Steel plate for flooring applications is available in full 2400 x 1200 mm sheets or cut to any required dimension.
What thickness of chequered plate is best for industrial flooring?
For mezzanine and walkway flooring in light industrial applications (pedestrian traffic, trolley access), 3 mm base metal thickness (approximately 4 mm total including raised pattern) is the standard minimum.
For vehicle access ramps and areas subject to forklift traffic, 5–8 mm base thickness is required.
For heavy plant areas or pit covers, 10–12 mm plate is specified. Stainless steel chequered plate (chequered steel sheet in SS 304) is specified for hygiene areas in food and pharma facilities where the floor must be washable. Contact Hidayath for span and load calculations.
4.2 Specialty and Decorative Stainless Steel Sheets
Beyond standard mill finishes, Hidayath stocks and supplies a comprehensive range of specialty sheets for architectural, decorative, and industrial use.

Magnetic stainless steel sheet (SS 430 grade) is also used for backsplash applications where magnetic properties are desired. |
| Perforated Stainless Steel Sheet Metal | Round, square, slot, and decorative hole patterns punched in SS 304 or 316 sheet. Used in screens, facades, acoustic panels, filters, and ventilation grilles. Hole size, pitch, and sheet thickness specify the product. |
| Expanded Stainless Steel Sheets | Diamond-pattern expanded mesh produced by slitting and stretching a flat sheet. Provides a rigid open mesh without welding. Used in security screens, stair infill panels, machine guards, and architectural facades. |
What is the difference between decorative stainless steel sheet and standard stainless steel sheet?
Standard stainless steel sheet is produced purely for its structural and corrosion-resistance properties. With surface finish as a secondary consideration.
Decorative stainless steel sheet is engineered for visual impact like mirror polish, PVD colour coatings (gold, rose gold, black, bronze), etched patterns, or embossed textures are applied to the mill-finished base to create a premium architectural surface.
Decorative sheets carry protective film on the finished face during transit and fabrication. For interior cladding, elevator panels, and luxury fit-out, stainless steel decorative sheets provide a high-end finish that is also hygienic, durable, and easy to maintain.
4.3 Industrial Plate and Still Plates
Industrial plate refers to stainless or carbon steel plate in thicknesses above 6 mm used for structural, pressure, and heavy industrial applications.
Still plates is a term used in the UAE trade for plain, untextured heavy steel plate. They are used in fabricating tanks, pressure vessels, structural frames, and industrial bases.
Hidayath supplies industrial sheet and industrial plate in both carbon steel and stainless grades, with cutting services available for plates up to 50 mm thickness.

6. Fabrication Guide: Cutting, Drilling, and Working with Stainless Steel Sheet
6.1 How to Cut 16 Gauge Stainless Steel Sheet
How to cut 16-gauge stainless steel sheet
16 gauge stainless steel sheet is 1.59 mm thick. Thin enough for hand tools but requiring the right technique to avoid work hardening and heat discoloration.
The best cutting methods are:
- Angle grinder with a stainless-steel-specific cutting disc. Use thin discs (1 mm) for clean, fast cuts with minimal heat.
- Plasma cutter — fastest method for straight and curved cuts, produces a clean edge with minimal HAZ (heat-affected zone) when used with the correct amperage.
- Jigsaw with a bi-metal blade — suitable for curves and internal cutouts; use cutting oil and a slow speed to prevent blade overheating.
- Tin snips (aviation snips) — for short, straight cuts in 16–20 gauge; slow but produces no heat.
Drilling Stainless Steel Sheet
What are the drilling methods for stainless steel sheet?
Drilling stainless steel requires specific techniques.
- Use cobalt HSS drill bits (M35 or M42 grade) or solid carbide bits
- Use low speed and high feed pressure the opposite of the instinct when drilling dulls. Slow speed (for a 6 mm bit in 304 stainless, approximately 300–500 RPM) prevents work hardening. High, consistent feed pressure maintains cutting contact and prevents rubbing.
- If the drill squeaks and produces dust instead of chips, the bit is rubbing and hardening the material — increase feed pressure or replace the bit.
- Use cutting oil or lubricant (soluble oil, sulphur-based cutting fluid, or even WD-40 for light use).
- Centre-punch accurately — stainless deflects drill points more than mild steel, causing wandering. Use a sharp centre punch.
- For larger holes (over 20 mm), use a step drill or hole saw with tungsten carbide teeth rated for stainless steel, with generous cutting oil.
- For sheet below 2 mm, clamp firmly to a backing board to prevent the sheet lifting and spinning on the drill — a major safety risk.
